Is it worth to pay $5.99 to buy a new version of Street Fighter IV (SF IV) with the long waiting function: Online Versus?
For fans of Street Fighter and iPhone users, it is great that SF IV has finally arrived with Online Versus mode, we can now play against different international players by Online Versus. It's so exciting, doesn't it?
However, if you have already bought the original SF IV (iOS version), I think you are still struggling whether it is worth to spend an additional $5.99 to buy SF IV Volt, isn't it? So, this review will help you to find the answer.

Presentation: 2/5
SF IV Volt is just another Capcom's money-sucking game. The story of each character is as same as previous SF versions. But, SF fans just want to fight, they won't consider the story of each character, right?
Graphics: 5/5
It's no doubt that the graphics of SF IV Volt are awesome! You can't argue how impressive that iPhone and iPad can bring you such high quality of graphics. UI images and font are similarly drawn or written with Chinese or Japanese traditional brush pen, it's cool and unique! And, the cubic avatar icon is super cute!
Just a word to describes graphics: COOL!!!
Funny cubic avatar icons!
Sound: 4/5
Again, we can't doubt about sound of SF IV Volt. Sound is very energetic, makes player feel excited and full of adrenaline!! Nonetheless, it's too easy to cover the speaker of your iPhone while playing the game because you have to hold tight iPhone to perform combo skills. So, we suggest you to use earphone while playing.
Gameplay: 3/5
The most important reason why you consider to buy this game even you have bought the original SF IV app is "Online Versus".
For the searching of online opponents, we think that it's quite easy to match someone. And, your opponents always have similar rank like you. You won't be afraid of facing some very powerful opponents in online versus.
Nevertheless, the speed of online versus suck! The percentage of getting disconnected or experiencing extremely slow speed of game while playing online versus is 50%! Maybe the online connection depends on the speed of your opponent's ISP and the distance of your opponent. But, we can't select the one with faster speed of connection and closer location, it's a bit sadly!
One more sadly issue is you can ONLY play online versus by WIFI connection. You CAN'T play SF IV Volt with 3G :<
It's not easy to get a good WIFI connection while you're going out. It's quite contradictory that we want to play online versus when we are free and out, e.g. waiting a bus.
Playing online by WIFI connection only...
Control: 3/5
The big weakness of control is that there is NO physical buttons on your iPhone. It makes player difficult to perform some combo skills. We believe that every SF fan would like to play SF by real joystick. Additionally, shortcut buttons make the execution of super combo too easy to be performed, it's too simple for experienced SF players. If Apple, Inc. can raise the limit of playing iOS games with use of Blue-tooth joystick or keyboard, it would be perfect for every SF fan, including our editors.
Lasting Appeal: 5/5
With online versus function, you can now challenge against any international players and the drop-in feature can make you busy with your iPhone anytime! We suggest you have to bring along a battery charger of iPhone anytime! Haha!! You will continue to play online versus to find the opponent who can beat you at last if you believe you're a lonely and the strongest street fighter in the world :P
Besides, this time, Capcom brings you "Challenge Bingo" in online versus. There are 9 different missions for you to complete in online versus, you can earn special points to upgrade your avatar, and purchase titles that directly affect your avatar's battles. The 9 missions change daily.
Bingo card allows you to earn Special points for upgrading your avatar! |
Moreover, the Player Cards function can let you view your personal stat and stat of the opponents you've encountered with. It lists your total play time, ranked match record, win streak, drop rate, number of times used of each character, achievement, etc. All these records make you heavily addict to SF IV Volt, you have to admit it!
Player card
Furthermore, there are 17 ready-to-use characters, including the new ones: Balrog, Vega and Cody! And unexpectedly, the most powerful character: Akuma is waiting for you to unlock and play!! The million-dollar question: How do you unlock Akuma?
More characters to play, including the legend: Akuma!
Plus the replays function can let you re-enjoy with how your friends or opponents are defeated by you! Showing the replays of how you have defeated your friends to your friends is so hurtful : )
Conclusion:
For the SF fans who have not bought the previous version of SF IV on iPhone, it's worth to buy this Volt version of online versus.
For the SF fans who have already bought the previous version of SF IV on iPhone, if you have spare money and really want to play online versus, it's fine to buy it.
However,we think Capcom only just re-releases the whole thing with minimal added features each time. If you really want Capcom to suck your money, we think you should wait for the next update of SF IV Volt, we certainly believe that Capcom will release an update with more characters. Maybe the next update is called Super SF IV Volt :)
Will Capcom release an update with ALL characters in SF series someday? Will Capcom release Capcom heroes VS Marvel heroes on iPhone. That's the dream of all SF fans for sure!
Where's all my money?
Anyway, SF is a memory for all of us! We all grew up with Ryu & Ken!!
